Singing OutWest - Vocally stamping out Homophobia and Transphobia
A musical extravaganza event to honour International Day against Homophobia Transphobia (IDAHO) beginning at 7.30 pm on Saturday 15th May 2010 at West 5 Bar in South Ealing. The event has been set up to increase awareness of IDAHO and to raise funds for OutWest
International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) is a really important day in the LGBT calendar as it marks Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered peoples wish to be accepted and valued as real members of society. Across the world, there has been opposition by many countries to the LGBT community when there is no legitimate voice to protect and defend them.
The concert, named Cabaret for a Cause, is a collection of songs that reflect some of the challenges facing the LGBT community, both at home and abroad.
In many different social and cultural contexts, homophobic and transphobic violence is being propagated by people who use religious arguments to justify their positions. But other voices do exist everywhere also within these same religions to object to the use of religions to justify hatred and rejection and sometimes even violence, crimes and bloodshed.
“IDAHO is a day where I count myself lucky at being able to be openly gay, and a day where I think of those in other countries who are not so lucky to be open. The concert hopefully recognises the pride and despair that some face, and to acknowledge those who support the LGBT community”.
Changing attitudes and behaviour is no small affair. Society as a whole has been built on values from a time when being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered was forbidden and condemned. Combating homophobia and transphobia requires a joint effort from everyone. Intolerance, prejudice, hate, ignorance and fear still largely prevail so this is why it is days like IDAHO are very important to educate society on the various struggles that still exist for the LGBT community today. Even in 21st Century Britain where in the last decade equal rights laws in the UK have changed, however, attitudes still have a lot of catching up to do.

About OutWest
OutWest is the social, representative and support group for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered communities of West London. It is one of the largest LGBT groups in London, currently serving seven out of the thirty-two boroughs of London. OutWest are currently represented in the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames.
OutWest began life in 1988 as the Hounslow Lesbian and Gay Group, one of the few LGBT groups in London at that time. Although it briefly suspended activities in the late 1990's it reformed in 2001 and was rebranded as OutWest. Over the last nine years, OutWest has moved from strength to strength and is now consulted on by service providers such as the Metropolitan Police, Hounslow Homes and the West London LGBT Forum, to name but a few! In September 2009, OutWest became a registered charity.
OutWest cover a large area of interest and support including immigration, housing, LGBT sport, police liaison, health, sexual health awareness and education. This said, OutWest have a very busy social calendar and hold a major event each month including events in LGBT Venues to celebrate LGBT History Month, IDAHO, World AIDS Day, to their flagship event a coach trip which enables our members to revel at Brighton Pride.

About IDAHO
In 2004, Louis-Georges Tin, university professor, intellectual, and homosexual rights activist, took the initiative of launching a International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, and founded the IDAHO Committee, an international association aiming at developing this initiative.
Since then, hundreds of associations in more than 50 countries have used the Day to bring about public and political mobilization for LGBT rights. In addition to being adopted by associations and movements, the Day is now officially recognized by a growing number of countries, provinces, regions, cities —from Mexico to Quebec, from the European Parliament to France, etc.
Why May 17th?
May 17 was chosen because the date is the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s May 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. This victory of the lesbian-gay-bisexual and transgender (LGBT) cause was a historic step towards considering freedom of sexual orientation and gender identity as a fundamental basic human right.

CUTTING EDGE CONSORTIUM NEWS BULLETIN - APRIL 2010 - EQUALITY BILL PASSED IN PARLIAMENT – BEWARE THE EXEMPTIONS!
The Cutting Edge Consortium welcomes the passage of the Equality Bill through Parliament this week but regrets the exemptions for religious organisations that remain. We believe that the continuing exemptions in employment give a green light for further reactionary opposition to anti discrimination provisions on goods and services, and against progressive change on sex education for young people.
Against the Exemptions to the Employment Regulations
CEC has campaigned during the course of the Equality Bill against the prioritising of freedom of thought, conscience and religion over the human rights of LGBT people. We have issued regular briefing papers, held a public meeting in Parliament and lobbied MPs, Lords and Civil servants. We were very disappointed that the Government’s intending narrowing of the law on religious exemptions in employment was watered down and then defeated in the House of Lords.
It is clear that many LGBT people, including LGBT people of faith, who work for religious organisations, in faith schools, for charities with a ‘religious ethos’, and delivering public services in other parts of the third sector, will continue to live in fear of discrimination and prejudice at their workplace. CEC is dismayed that the Schools Standards and Framework Act has not been brought under the new law so as to give proper protection to teachers of all subjects in faith schools. It is also clear that many third sector organisations are openly flouting the law on equality as it currently exists.
For the Public Duty
The CEC welcomes the positive aspects of the Equality Bill, most notably the extension of the duty on public bodies to promote equality in sexual orientation. We will be campaigning to ensure that the regulations on this duty, which are due to be issued in coming months meet the aspirations of the many LGBT people who rely on public services.
Civil Partnerships in Religious Buildings
The CEC welcomes the passing of Lord Alli’s amendment to the Equality Bill that permits Civil Partnerships to take place in religious buildings. We congratulate the religious organisations who already support such ceremonies, namely the Unitarian Church, the Society of Friends and the Metropolitan Community Church and support the extension of this right in other religious denominations. We look forward to the promised consultation on the appropriate Regulations and future reform of the Marriage Law in the interests of equality.
For Compulsory Sex Education
The CEC regrets that the Governments provisions in the recent Children, Schools & Families Bill to bring in sex education as a compulsory part of the curriculum was removed in the negotiations with the Conservative Party at the final stages of the Parliamentary process. LGBT young people as well as their parents and families need accurate information on sex and sexuality if they are to begin to counter the homophobia and transphobia still prevalent in our society, and lead happy and healthy lives.
Future Battles
As the General Election draws nearer we must ensure that no concessions may be made to homophobia and transphobia in the guise of religious popularism. We regret the remarks of Chris Grayling, the Conservative Shadow Home Secretary that there is a case for religious exemptions to the provision of goods and services to LGBT people. We will be watching closely the Charity Commissions review of the case of Catholic Care Leeds that may allow religious fostering and adoption agencies to opt out of equality.
